The life of a dancer is dedication and commitment to both the craft and finding ways to improve technique and style through the search for excellence while smiling and having fun. These are the qualities Kara, as a choreographer and teacher convey to her students as young as 5 years, youth and adults, in presenting them to the world of dance.
A disciplined artist, who took her first steps at age three (3) into the creative world of movement and expression at the Ottawa School of Dance. Later studying at the Elaine Hunter Dance School (EHDS) where at the age of six (6), was chosen to be on the competitive dance team.
As a first generation Canadian with musical and cultural roots in Trinidad and Tobago, her lessons first began with learning how to sway to the rhythms of the steel pans, to both classical, the three-step salsa, and the very popular Soca, known as the (So)ul of (Ca)lypso. It is an Afro-Caribbean beat mixed with East Indian rhythms and created in the 1970s among other genres. By embracing all these styles into her teaching, she imbues a sense of confidence and Joie de vivre or an exultation of the spirit, within her students.
Trained in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, Hip Hop and Caribbean Dance. Over thirty years later her dancing shoes and rhythms continued to mesmerise audiences across Canada and the United States where she performed as a dancer for three (3) years with the Ottawa based, Culture Shock Canada, further strengthening her skills and knowledge of urban dance culture.
Kara has performed over the years to audiences made up of country representatives, National and International Leaders at annual and other community events such as: Canada Day on Parliament Hill and Majors Hill Park, Black History Month on Parliament Hill, Fallingbrook Fair, Back up dancer for up and coming singers, Weddings, Local associations and charity events.
